Zofran & Pregnancy: Negligent Prescribing Leads to Birth Defects

Before drugs are marketed to the general public, they must go through rigorous testing and approval processes. After a medication is approved and becomes available for public consumption, patients naturally assume that the medication is safe when a doctor prescribes it. Unfortunately, drugs that are safe for one use may not be safe for another, off-label application.

Zofran (also known generically as ondansetron) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991, 1999, and 2006 for nausea prevention and treatment for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The manufacturer of Zofran, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), did not win approval for use as a treatment for morning sickness during pregnancy. However, once the drug became available, the drug manufacturer told doctors they could prescribe it to pregnant mothers complaining of nausea problems. Eventually, birth defects and fetal fatalities in association with Zofran use during the first trimester of pregnancy came to light. An increase in heart defects, cleft palate, and ossification (boney) abnormalities, among others, has been documented among babies born to mothers who took Zofran during pregnancy.
