Securing Justice After Life-Changing IUD Complications

For women, birth control often leads to complications. Traditional hormonal options (i.e. the birth control pill) can increase the risk of blood clots and other health risks, so many women turn to intrauterine devices (IUDs). Some IUDs, like Mirena, release a hormone called levonorgestrel, but others, like the Paragard IUD, operate without hormones entirely.

Unfortunately, all IUDs can migrate out of position, be ejected from the uterus, cause unplanned or ectopic pregnancies, or perforate the uterine wall. Paragard IUDs, in particular, are known for breaking, especially during removal. As a result, many women must undergo surgery or sustain long-term reproductive harm.

If you’ve been adversely affected by a Paragard IUD, you may be entitled to compensation. At Joel E. Brown, Attorney at Law, we are accepting cases for a potential lawsuit against Teva, the manufacturer of Paragard IUDs.

All those interested should contact our firm immediately at (309) 271-1118.

How Does the Paragard IUD Work?

The Paragard device is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The device consists of a T-shaped plastic frame with copper wire wrapped around. When inside the uterus, the copper wire produces an inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm and eggs and thus prevents pregnancy.

Paragard is the only copper IUD available in the United States. The most common side effects associated with the device include bleeding between periods, cramps, and heavy, painful menstrual cycles. Nevertheless, many women face more severe complications.

Complications Associated With Paragard IUDs

Infection

Health care providers monitor women for up to a month after insertion. This is because the implant can cause reproductive infections. Symptoms of infection can include:

  • Unusually heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Foul vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain or tenderness in the abdomen
  • Unexplained fever
  • Pain during sex

Unplanned or Ectopic Pregnancies

About 1% of women experience an unplanned pregnancy while using a Paragard IUD, and women who do conceive face a high risk of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies occur when a fertilized egg implants and begins growing outside of the uterus. Most often, these pregnancies take place in the fallopian tubes and can cause life-threatening bleeding, infertility, and other damages.

Some women also expel Paragard from their uteruses without noticing and become pregnant as a result.

Migration

Once inserted, Paragard is supposed to stay in place for up to 10 years, though it can be removed at any time. Nevertheless, many women have had their IUDs move around their reproductive tract. This ‘migration’ can make the device less effective and cause pain, bleeding, and even embedment and perforation.

Embedment, Breakage, and Perforation

While inside the body, Paragard can move and embed itself into human tissue. The device can also break and perforate the uterine wall, cervix, and vagina. Many women require surgery for these complications, and sometimes, pieces of copper and plastic are permanently stuck in the body.

Damage to the uterus and other organs can be permanent and lead to extensive medical treatments and even infertility.

If you’ve been affected by any of the complications above, please contact our Peoria Paragard attorney immediately.
